DEACONS

WHAT IS A DEACON?

Deacons are mature and godly men and women who, under the direction of the pastors and elders, nurture church unity by caring for the logistical, administrative, and physical needs of the church. Their ministry is to take care of the practical needs of the Christian community, allowing the pastors and elders to give their time to shepherding and overseeing the church.

WHAT DOES A DEACON DO?

Acts 6 tells us that the elders needed the deacons so that they could remain focused on their role: to oversee the ministry of the Word and the shepherding of the congregation. As elders of Eastpoint Church, we need deacons. The work of the ministry is too vital and too large for us to do it alone.

At Eastpoint, deacons have two general responsibilities:

  1. Supporting and Supplementing the Ministry of the Elders.
The deacons assist the elders in caring for the sheep practically.

  2. Protecting and Promoting the Unity of the Church.
The role of the deacon is designed to safeguard the harmony of the church.

WHO SHOULD SERVE AS A DEACON?

Deacons are to be mature and godly men and women, providing an example worthy of emulation. There are six specific traits that make up the character qualities of a deacon in 1 Timothy 3.

  • Not double-tongued

  • Not addicted to much wine

  • Not greedy for dishonest gain

  • Holds the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience

  • Tested and proven

  • Faithful family life
