Day of Reflection
What is a “Day of Reflection”?
It’s not uncommon to take inventory of our lives each year. We meet with financial advisors annually and ask, “How am I doing?” We have annual reviews with our bosses and ask, “How am I doing?” We meet with physical trainers and doctors to take inventory and ask, “How am I doing?”
In the same way, we want to regularly take time for personal reflection with the Lord to pause and reflect on our own journey of discipleship, and ask God, “How am I doing?”
We’re calling this a Day of Reflection. By slowing down and pausing to examine ourselves spiritually, we’re inviting the Lord to show us where He wants us to grow and inviting Him to transform us.
How to Get Started
-

Spiritual Self-Assessment
Prayerfully walk through each of our discipleship values using the Reflection tool and take inventory. Ask of each trait: Is this missing, weak, visible, or strong in our lives? Invite the Lord to show you yourself.
-

Complete Your Plan
In light of what the Lord has shown you in your assessment, which one of our discipleship values do you believe the Lord wants you to grow in? Choose tools and resources to help you grow in your head, heart, and hands.
Ways to Reflect
-
A Day By the Water
Whether by boat or on a blanket by the bay, let the sound of the waves or the stillness of a lake help quiet your mind. Open the Reflection Tool and note what rises to the surface when you let the Lord examine your heart.
-
An Evening of Worship
Throw on your favorite playlist of musical worship songs. After singing or praying, use the Reflection Tool to take inventory. Write down what you sensed God highlighting in you through his word.
-
Somewhere in Nature
Take a hike or head to a local park. Sit where you can hear the wind or see the trees move, and enjoy God’s creation as you reflect using the Reflection Tool. Take note of what you feel God is revealing to you about yourself.
-
With Your Spouse or Friend
Share the questions in the Reflection Tool with each other and talk through what stands out. As you write, invite the Lord and your trusted loved one to inform the answers you capture in the tool. Ask your loved one: How do you experience me in these traits?
-
After the Kids Go to Bed
In the stillness of the evening, take a few minutes to slow your breathing and settle your thoughts. Use the Reflection Tool to process yourself unfiltered and unafraid. Ask God for the courage to see yourself through his eyes and take notes.
-
Before Everyone Wakes
If you’re fresher in the morning than at night, wake while the house is still. Open the Reflection Tool and reflect on what God is speaking to you about yourself. Spend these few focused minutes asking the Lord to search you, as according to Psalm 139:23-24.
-
Alone in Your Room
Close the door, silence distractions (like your phone!), and get brutally honest with God. Use the Reflection Tool to journal your thoughts as you take the Spiritual Self-Assessment. Journal what you feel he’s saying to you.
